SWAMP Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Sampling Related
SWAMP Bioassessment SOP (phab_sopr6) (PDF file)
This SOP describes the process for collecting benthic macroinvertebrate samples and associated physical and chemical data for ambient bioassessments in California.
SWAMP_SOP_Field_Measures_Water_Sediment_Collection_v1.0 (PDF file)
This SOP describes the procedures used by the Marine Pollution Studies Lab-Department of Fish and Game (MPSL-DFG) for conducting field measurements and field collections of water and bed sediment samples in SWAMP. This SOP is for reference and information purposes only and is not required by SWAMP.

Database Related
SWAMP_SOP_Field_Data_Verification_v2.1 (PDF file)
This SOP describes the process used by both the agency responsible for the capture and entry of Field data and Moss Landing Marine Laboratory (MLML) Data Management Team (DMT) to verify the data for the SWAMP database and may be used as a guide for other related programs.
SWAMP_SOP_Chemistry_Data_Verification_v1.1 (PDF file)
This SOP discusses the data loading and verification process for the analytical chemistry and bacteria data files of the SWAMP database and may be used as a guide for other related programs.
SWAMP_SOP_Toxicity_Data_Verification_v3.1 (PDF file)
This SOP describes the process used by the Moss Landing Marine Laboratory (MLML) Data Management Team (DMT) to verify toxicity data for the State of California's SWAMP database and it may be used as a guide for other related programs.

Quality Assurance (QA) Related
SWAMP_SOP_Contract_Lab_Data_Verification_v1 (PDF file)
This SOP describes the process to be used by SWAMP laboratories to verify and validate their program data batches. Data verification ensures that reported results accurately depict work performed by the contract laboratory. Data validation confirms that the verified data batch meets the overall quality requirements of the SWAMP project.
Data Classification System - In Review, Check back later
This SOP describes the data validation by the DMT and/or SWAMP QA Team prior to placement of data to the permanent side of the SIMS. The classification system labels data batches as “SWAMP-compliant” or other categories based on compliance with the QAMP and supporting documentation.
Data Batch Validation - In Review, Check back later
This SOP describes the data assessment conducted by the SWAMP QA Team. Summarily, a percentage of data from the permanent side of the SWAMP database is collected and validated against hard-copy documents such as the original chain-of-custody forms, bench sheets, instrument outputs, and analytical calculations.
SWAMP_SOP_OnSite_Lab_Audit_v8 (PDF file)
This SOP is used by the SWAMP QA Team during its audits of program contract laboratories. The purpose of an audit is to evaluate laboratory practices, procedures, personnel, and facilities against the requirements of the QAMP.
